Finding inspiration

When you struggle finding inspiration, It is important to keep an open mind and be receptive to new experiences. Inspiration can come from anywhere. A book, a movie, a conversation, or even a walk in nature. Here are some of my top tips for finding it.

Look at art history

I’m a huge fan of art history, and I frequently turn to it when I’m looking for inspiration. I love to study the creations of artists like Dürer, Monet, Caravaggio, and Dali, and try to incorporate their methods and styles into my work. By looking to the past, you can find new ideas and inspiration that you might not have thought of otherwise. Make it a date to go to the art show, visit a museum, a gallery or a library.

Read children’s books

Children’s books are an excellent source of finding inspiration. They’re full of color, and imagination, and can spark your creativity in unexpected ways. I get to read many illustrated books with Oliver. Thinking about the stories and seeing illustrations by other artists often sparks new ideas.

Follow artists on social media

Social media is a great way to connect with other artists and creators. Follow other artists on Instagram and see their work. The creative process videos are my favorite. I’ve learned so much from watching other people create their work. It’s everything from the materials they use, and how they use them to the inspiration behind their work. It’s a great way to get fresh ideas and see many new techniques and styles.

Take an online class

Taking an online class is a great way to learn from a specific artist you admire. Learn new techniques and get inspired. There are so many great classes out there, whether you’re interested in watercolors, acrylics, or digital art. I’ve taken several online classes, and they’ve all been fantastic sources of knowledge and inspiration.

Experiment with new techniques

Don’t be afraid to try new things and experiment with different techniques. Sometimes the results are surprising and can lead to new ideas and inspiration. I encourage myself to use a different medium from time to time, go to the art store, and pick up something cool and new, just for the fun of it. A new brush or tube of paint is sometimes just the thing to get you back into creating. I made a blog post about the materials I use, maybe you’ll find something fun to try yourself.

Spend time in nature

Nature is one of the most inspiring things in the world. I love walks in the woods, explore new places, and just be outside. Being in nature can help clear your mind and open up new creative pathways. Take photos, pick flowers, leaves, rocks, and wood. Use them as references. Include textures, details, or shapes you found in your work.

Practice self-care

Taking care of yourself is crucial to maintaining your creativity and inspiration. Make sure to take breaks when you need them, eat healthy food, exercise, and get plenty of rest. When you’re feeling your best, you’re more likely to be inspired and creative.

Finding inspiration is all about having an open mind and being open to new experiences. So try new things, and see what sparks your creativity. Keep working, keep creating, and the inspiration will come.
